Here's how he achieved his dramatic body transformation. Growing up, Liem Pham was bullied for being a skinny guy. Though the 19-year-old college student from California was always an athlete (a swimmer, to be specific), Pham was never quite able to build up the muscle he thought his 6-foot frame deserved. Until, that is, he discovered the weight room - and packed on more than 35 pounds of muscle.

“I was always called ‘skinny’ and ‘Mr. Skeleton’ and stuff like that,” the biotech student told MensHealth.com. “I didn’t mind it at first, but it slowly wore on me.”

But without knowing what to do for muscle growth, he squandered his time on workouts that weren’t quite working, performing endless rounds of calisthenics, situps, and bodyweight movements without any real routine.

He knew this wasn’t enough, especially after cruising YouTube for workout advice and coming across a video of professional bodybuilder Steven Cao.

I thought to myself, ‘Wow.’” He wanted to look like that, and he was ready to put the work in.

Pham began digging deep into the research and found a PPL - or “push, pull, legs” - routine that he thought could work for him.“The summer going into senior year I put on 17 pounds,” he said. “I went from 130 to about 150.” (By the way, PPL workouts aren’t just for young guys. This circuit uses push-pull supersets, and it's ideal for men over 40.)

Then, Pham started working out with a buddy from high school. Having a workout partner changed his fitness game forever; it made him more dedicated to the routine, because he had to ensure he didn’t let his partner down.

“I put on another 12 pounds because of that,” he said. “I feel like this is the body I should have had my entire life.”

Each day, he spends his time on one main lift: either bench press, overhead press, press squat, or deadlift, doing a certain number of reps. Week by week, he increases the weight and lowers the reps until he maxes out, performing this in a four-week cycle. Pham has found so much success that friends, family members, and gym strangers have starting to approach him for advice.

“One thing I've always told [people] is that they need to eat big, eat right, lift big, and lift right,” Pham said. “This means they should keep track of the amount and types of food in their diet and lift with proper form while focusing on progressive overload. This way, they'll see definitive progress and make the most out of their beginner gains unlike me.”

“Instagram is full of deception, and the fitness industry is grossly saturated with hopefuls trying to find their own niche in this community,” he said. “The sculpted bodies you see on your feed are results of hours and hours of hard work, but they don't tell the whole story.”

Still, if you're looking to make some muscle gains, Pham says you should start as soon as possible.

“Just start right now," he said. "But remember the quote: 'The gym shouldn’t be your life, but it should make your life better.'”

Video: nbkz Sakai panel @ Anime Expo 2016

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Mangagamer, a localization company bringing top selling Japanese visual novels to the English-speaking market, held a panel at Anime Expo 2016 with their guest nbkz Sakai (伸和酒井).

The CEO of the Japanese visual novel company minori,  nbkz Sakai has produced many famous pretty and shiny games, such as ef ~a fairy tale of the two~ and eden*, some of which have received anime adaptations. Ever since 2010, minori has worked with Mangagamer to bring the original visual novels to the Western market.

Anime Diet was able to capture almost all of the panel in the video, and a transcript (which has been lightly edited for brevity and clarity) is available below the video for those who prefer to read it instead.

Mangagamer Staff: Hello everyone, thank you for coming to the nbkz Q&A panel today. I’m Kai, great to see everybody, we have with us nbkz Sakai. So if you didn’t know, nbkz is the president and artistic developer for Minori, a Japanese visual novel developer, who did ef ~a fairy tale of the two~, eden*, Supipara, and hopefully many more to come! I have a few questions for nbkz. In just a moment, we’re going to show you a cute little video!

MG: So that was ef ~a fairy tale of the two~. nbkz, could you give us some insight into your experience working on ef?

nbkz Sakai: ef was made in 2006, so about ten years ago, but that was the release date. We started working on ef about three years before, in 2003. So watching it again right now… it feels kind of old. So reflecting back on that brings back memories, of working together with the director, Mikage, though he isn’t with Minori anymore. I remember all the fun days we had arguing with each other.

How many of you here have already played the game ef? A lot!

ef has five characters: Miyako, Kei, Chihiro, Mizuki, and Yuuko.
It was originally planned to start off with the first three characters, and then have Yuuko towards the end, but it actually starts with Yuuko at the beginning and Mizuki at the end.
In the end, what you played has Mizuki incorporated with Yuuko. We decided that this was the best way to showcase the story to the reader. Minori is a game company that involves a lot of staff in the decision making process, and everyone gets together to agree upon how best to showcase the story.

ef was sold into two chapters: the first tale and the latter tale. I believe ef is still the #1 Japanese game in volume of text and images used. And if anyone tells us to make a game like that again, we’ll probably say, “Nah!” We’re not that young anymore!

MG: What does “ef” actually mean?

nbkz: We really didn’t give it much thought. We just decided it might be an abbreviation for anything! We just pulled out the dictionary and the letter “E” could stand for anything, like “everything” or “eternal” or whatever. The original title for this game was actually “Angel’s Sunday”; we decided to use that as the fandisc title. We already decided upon what phrase to use towards the end of Angel’s Sunday. In the latter tale, the ending theme is called “Ever Forever”. This was actually the first thing we decided upon when we created the game. So, since we’ve decided on the song name, let’s make it “ef” for the rest of the game. For the animation, the opening theme was called “Euphoric Field,” so that also stands for “ef”. We made it seem like everything was tied to the abbreviation “ef”. There’s a lot of wordplay going on in the anime version of ef. For example, if you line up all the titles of the anime episodes, they become lyrics. There’s a lot of hidden easter eggs.

MG: Do you have any memorable or noteworthy experiences from when you worked on ef?

nbkz: It was really tough and very busy while we were creating this game. We worked on this game for a very long time, and we couldn’t see the goal or the end of this game. I still have nightmares about making this game. A hellish nightmare I’ll never finish this game on time.

MG: We’re going to our next title, eden*.

nbkz: It’s been a while since I’ve seen that too.

MG: What made your team make a kinetic, all-ages visual novel about an inevitable apocalypse? What sparked this idea?

nbkz: Jump back to when we were creating ef. Once we finished, we all got together, and concluded that ef was a really long game; let’s make our next game a bit shorter. We decided to do a more experimental type of game, which isn’t set in the stereotypical high-school setting. We wanted to do something very different. While ef was the best-selling Minori game in Japan, eden* was the best-selling Minori game in the foreign market. Eden* has become Minori’s most famous title for foreign fans, and through this title, we were able to learn a lot of things about the foreign market.

We’d like to create a new title similar to this! How many people here have played the game eden*? Thank you very much. It’s being sold on Steam for a very generous price. Please try it out!

MG: Similar to ef, did you have any memorable experiences with eden* as well?

nbkz: We worked on eden* very hard as well, and we put a very heavy emphasis on the visuals. For example, a typical visual novel has static backgrounds. If we are the characters and the audience is the player, from your perspective, the background would be this wall behind me. But if it was eden*, we have backgrounds created for all four sides as well. We call this the Pokemon depth of field… like Spielberg. So it’s a camera angle thing, where you can have two characters on screen with two different cameras, so you can see a characters from different camera angles.

This is a really good technique to use to switch around the perspective of the player. And a camera has bokeh, ie. to blur out backgrounds when you are very close. It’s a technique used in a lot of movies where two characters on screen can be individually focused on for emphasis, leaving the other blurred out, so you know who to pay attention to. If you switch around the camera angle, you might be able to see sunshine shining through from the other side.

Because we decided to go to such extreme lengths, the amount of work wasn’t much less than ef. The story itself is only about 1/4 the size of ef, but since we focused so much on visual quality experiments, it took about the same amount of work as ef. The staff was very angry at me.

When we saw the eden* opening, the girl, Sion, ran across the water. When you are drawing an anime, it’s very difficult to draw characters with their feet on the ground. If you watch anime, you will notice that they try to cut scenes where characters’ feet touch the ground. I was reminded by watching this opening animation that we took on this challenge! And yeah, I understand why all the animators say that it’s very difficult to do.

MG: Would nbkz want to share any further insight into eden* before moving on?

nbkz: So we’ll next move onto showing Supipara. Mangagamer will be selling this game on July 29th. Can you pull up the panel?

nbkzSupipara is still an unfinished work in Japan. We only released chapters 1 and 2. The entire game is five chapters long. We decided to release the first chapter for the US and European market. I believe, based on sales of eden*, we’ll definitely release Supipara chapter 2. As for chapter 3, 4, 5… we’ll probably not sell in Japan, due to low sales. However, with the foreign market, depending on sales, we may release chapters 3-5, specifically for your market. Please purchase chapters 1 and 2 and we may be able to release the remaining chapters. I believe this game will be sold on Steam, so please purchase this. It’s got the most recent techniques and our specialties in creating our games, what you would call the Minori technique, all squished into Supipara!

Just reviewing the Supipara opening, I was very impressed with the way we able to animate the sequence with Alice, the little witch, flying across the sky. We did the animation where Alice flies from her house to her destination in just one cut. We created a 3D model of that and an environment so we could animate her flying in different directions. Supipara is set in Kamakura, a city in Japan,
and we simulated how the city would look like from multiple perspectives in the 3D scale model.

Unfortunately, the Japanese PC game market has been stagnant, so it didn’t sell very well and we’re deeply in the red on Supipara. It was very very bad, the company was almost about to go bankrupt back then. After reflecting on the video, I’m very satisfied how it turned out. It was really great that we were able to do this game. We’re probably not going to release chapters 3-5 in Japan, but story, and everything has already been completed. It’s just a matter of how much revenue we can get from the foreign market, and if it’s good enough, we can do the rest of the chapters.

I guess this is it for my take on Supipara… do you have any questions?

MG: How difficult would it be to assemble the original Supipara team for future chapter development?

nbkz: Actually, it won’t be that difficult. Very few people left minori after Supipara. All the tech guys and people who did key animation sequences are still here. It won’t be that difficult. Most of the storyline and the artwork is already done for chapters 3-5, we just need a little tweaking, adding more illustrations, and polishing up. It will still take a little more time to complete Supipara. We still have to eat and we need revenue to make Supipara. If eden* didn’t sell that well, we probably wouldn’t have been able to release Supipara.

Japan demands games that have a long storyline, but Minori games have compact storylines. This has more to do with minori’s style, because we want to focus on the scenes and visuals instead of the story and the text. In a very typical visual novel, you usually have two characters standing there with very few movements of their hands or faces. It kind of looks like a puppet show, like something you show to little kids. Minori tries to stay away from that as much as possible.

If you really think about it, you feel odd playing a typical visual novel because you really do not see any situation in real life where two characters just stand in front of you with very few facial expressions or hand gestures. It feels kind of weird. Minori tries to stay away from these “unnatural” techniques commonly used in visual novels. With Supipara, we tried to use techniques like characters with lip synced mouths and blinking eyes. Because of that, the staff had to draw a lot of animation sequences and drawings. The staff got angry at me again.

Even though the staff gets angry: “why do I have to do all this?”, I tell them that, “No one else is doing it, it’s fun and interesting, let’s do it!” The staff accepts that. In the end, they do what I ask, and they are happy, and I am very satisfied at how much effort the staff has put in. It’s kind of like Minori is a “black company” like Wal-Mart where people are paid very low but expectations are high. In Japanese, we call these “black corporations” because they are very dark… and black…

All jokes aside, all of our staff, including myself, want to showcase the best game we can ever produce, to all the fans and consumers who purchase our products. We have a secret where we want to surprise everyone every time we bring out a new game. We’d like to continue that tradition as we go along.

Supipara will be going on sale July 29th, so please purchase it.
And that’s about it for Supipara.

MG: We’d like to open up the floor for a very short Q&A session!

Interpreter: One rule: if you want to ask nbkz a question, tell him your name, and your favorite game.

Questioner: Minori game?

nbkz: Any game!

Questioner: Kevin, favorite game is Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors.
In every minori game, the sound track is done by Tenmon. What is it like to work with him, and what do you think of his work in general?

nbkz: Since I know his personality (we’re close friends), it’s very easy to work with him. Compared to Makoto Shinkai, it’s much easier… Even though I might ask him to do several retakes if I’m not satisfied, he probably deep down hates me, but he pretty much gets along with me and does his job really well. My belief is, despite how that might sound, he gives it his 100% best, and that’s the biggest motivation for him to keep on making better and better music.

The strongest advice I’d probably give him is, don’t ever take shortcuts or cutbacks to anything, I want him to give us the best that he could, otherwise, everyone else will start to slack off and cut corners. We don’t really want to do that.

Questioner: Raymond, favorite game is The Fruit of Grisaia.
You seem to have a lot of tech in the backgrounds and the scenes, like in eden*. Do you see anything in VR?

nbkz: We have a lot of ideas in mind, but virtual reality isn’t one that we think is possible at this point. We are mainly focused on adapting and portraying techniques similar to those used in anime and Hollywood movies in our games.

Questioner: Winston, favorite game is ef.
Prior to ef, you worked on Wind ~a breath of heart~ and Haru no Ashioto. Was there anything from those two games that led to the creation of ef?

nbkz: Before that, there was also a game called Bittersweet Fools. Our first game was Bittersweet Fools, our second game was Wind ~a breath of heart~, and our third game was Haru no Ashioto. Every time we finish one game, we celebrate that we’ve made the best game ever. Like everyone else, we take a day off, sleep, etc. And then we reflect back on the game that we’d just produced, and we start regretting. Why do we do this? Every time we finish a game and take a short breather, we come back regretting saying, “Man, I really want to scrap everything and start from scratch!” That’s not possible, because once it’s being sold, it can’t really be recalled.
Since we can’t recall those games back, we can only use that motivation to be more successful with future titles.

I guess you could say that if we are satisfied with our own product, that probably means it’s game over for minori. Please continue supporting us until… we reach our “game over”!

Question Guy: Constantine, favorite game is Tsukihime.
In ef, there was a pretty big change in style from Wind ~a breath of heart~ and Haru no Ashioto, where there was just this huge increase in highly-detailed, very gorgeous CG artwork. What was the process in deciding on taking such a huge undertaking in making ef?

nbkz: Our focus on CG artwork predates Haru no Ashioto and actually begins with Wind ~a breath of heart~Haru no Ashioto was actually produced with very limited staff members. Haru no Ashioto was actually a testing ground for future graphic artists and sheet designers who worked on ef.

The game Haru no Ashioto is 100% complete, from my perspective. For all of the storyline, storyboard, plot, effects, and cinematography of Haru no Ashioto, I made all the decisions by myself. But at that time, the new graphic artists and chief designers didn’t quite understand what I wanted to do at that time. It’s kind of difficult to explain that on a piece of paper, or even through the words from my mouth, so they actually had to create a game to understand what I wanted to do. So the game Haru no Ashioto was made.

To put it in another way, Haru no Ashioto became a stepping stone to ef, which is what I really wanted to do. And that’s how the beautiful CG of ef came along.

MG: We wanted to move onto something very special to nbkz Sakai, if he’d like to introduce it…
This is his new game, Trinoline!

nbkz: One more thing, this is our new game Trinoline. For all the special people who are here, this is first time anyone has seen artwork for Trinoline; not even Japan has seen it. The reason why I wanted to show this at Anime Expo is because we want to sell this worldwide as well. I’d like to consider Trinoline to be a compilation of everything we’ve done so far…

Eden* sold very well worldwide, and we think we might want to do something very similar to eden* [with Trinoline]. I completely understand that the Japanese market has different tastes. Therefore we decided that we should make a title that incorporates both aspects of what sells in Japan and sells worldwide. That’s why we decided to give the Trinoline project a green light. We anticipate our release date for Trinoline will be early 2017 for the Japanese market.

Usually the translation of visual novels happens after the Japanese release, but that leads to differences in release dates because translation takes time. In contrast to that, we want to close this gap, so we are working closely with translators to translate as we make the game. So we can release the worldwide and Japanese versions with a very short gap between the two. That responsibility falls on Mangagamer, so I really hope they do a good job translating Trinoline. So if it doesn’t come out soon enough, complain to their staff and give them more pressure… and Mangagamer will become more like a “black company” like minori!

I’d like to release this game in Japan as quickly as possible, and hopefully you will get it quickly as well. This illustration will be shown in Japan sometime around July 20th, so you are the first to see this. I guess everyone will be wondering what nbkz was talking about at Anime Expo, as some people here are already sharing this picture on social media, so [Japanese fans will] know what I did!

It’s been about ten years since Minori started looking towards the foreign market. We started off by creating a blockade wall. It took a huge leap of faith to walk over that wall to see the outside. I believe when we first put the IP block on our website for foreign fans, I mentioned that we would like to tear down this wall in the future. Although it took about ten years, we finally started to tear down that wall, thanks to Mangagamer, and we’d like to work together and provide more of our games to the foreign market.

I truly believe in spite of the Japanese gaming market shrinking, the US and European market seem to be growing. It’s still smaller than Japan right now, but it’s growing at a nice pace, so we look forward to that. Market growth is based on fans who want to share what they love to other potential fans, and that’s how the market keeps growing, so: thank you, fans. Hopefully you’ll keep on supporting us to see more and better titles for the foreign market.

Interpreter: That just about concludes our panel, thank you very much for coming and visiting!

Excess body weight before 50 is associated with higher risk of dying from pancreatic cancer

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Excess weight before age 50 may be more strongly associated with pancreatic cancer mortality risk than excess weight at older ages, according to results of a study presented at the AACR Annual Meeting 2019, March 29-April 3.

Pancreatic cancer is relatively uncommon, accounting for just over 3 percent of all new cancer cases. However, it is an extremely deadly type of cancer, with a five-year survival rate of just 8.5 percent, according to the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. In the United States, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death, after lung and colorectal cancer, and is expected to cause about 46,000 deaths in 2019.

"Pancreatic cancer rates have been steadily increasing since the early 2000s," said the study's lead author, Eric J. Jacobs, PhD, senior scientific director of Epidemiology Research at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta. "We've been puzzled by that increase because smoking -- a major risk factor for pancreatic cancer -- is declining.

"Increased weight in the U.S. population is a likely suspect, but previous studies have indicated that excess weight is linked with only a relatively small increase in risk, which doesn't look large enough to fully explain recent increases in pancreatic cancer rates," Jacobs continued.

Jacobs said, however, that most previous studies on the link between weight and pancreatic cancer were based on weight measured in older adulthood, which may be less informative because it could reflect body fat gained too late in life to influence risk of pancreatic cancer during a typical lifespan. In this study, researchers sought to find out if excess weight measured earlier in adulthood might be more strongly linked to pancreatic cancer risk than excess weight measured at older ages.

Researchers examined data from 963,317 U.S. adults with no history of cancer who enrolled in the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study II, a nationwide study of cancer mortality that began in 1982 and followed participants through 2014. All participants reported their weight and height just once, at the start of the study, when some were as young as 30 while others were in their 70s or 80s. The researchers used this information to calculate body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight relative to height, as an indicator of excess weight.

During the follow-up period, 8,354 participants died of pancreatic cancer. As expected, higher BMI was linked with increased risk of dying of pancreatic cancer, but this increase in risk was largest for BMI assessed at earlier ages. An increase of five units of BMI, about 32 pounds for a 5-foot, 7-inch adult, was associated with 25 percent increased risk in those who had their BMI assessed between ages 30 and 49; 19 percent increased risk in those assessed between 50 and 59; 14 percent increased risk in those assessed between ages 60 and 69; and 13 percent increased risk in those assessed between ages 70 and 89. Jacobs noted that while the study only had information on deaths from pancreatic cancer, the disease is nearly always fatal, so results are expected to be similar to those for new diagnoses of pancreatic cancer.

Jacobs said the study results indicate that excess weight could increase risk of death from pancreatic cancer more than previously believed. Furthermore, Jacobs noted that recent generations are reaching early middle age with more excess weight than earlier generations did.

Therefore, he anticipates that excess weight will explain a larger proportion of pancreatic cancer risk in the future as newer and heavier generations reach the older ages when pancreatic cancer typically occurs. For example, he estimates that 28 percent of pancreatic cancer deaths in Americans born between 1970 and 1974 will be attributable to excess weight, compared to only 15 percent of pancreatic cancer deaths among Americans born in the 1930s, a group that was much less likely to be obese in early middle age.

"Our results strongly suggest that to stop and eventually reverse recent increases in pancreatic cancer rates, we will need to do better in preventing excess weight gain in children and younger adults, an achievement which would help prevent many other diseases as well," Jacobs said.

This study was funded by the American Cancer Society.

Zinc for Heavy Metals

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Got heavy metals?

If the elevation of heavy metals is modest (for example, less than twice the upper limit of the reference range), I think it is best to use zinc supplementation as a gentle approach to help detoxify. Here’s how I recommend using zinc for heavy metals.

Mercury, lead, cadmium, oh my! This is how to use zinc supplementation to help you detoxify from heavy metals.

Hi. I’m Dr. Chris Masterjohn of chrismasterjohnphd.com. And this is Chris Masterjohn Lite, where the name of the game is “Details? Shmeetails. Just tell me what works!”

And today we’re going to talk about using zinc supplementation to detox from heavy metals.

So here’s the thing. I don’t know of any studies in humans showing how zinc supplementation can help reduce levels of heavy metals, but I do know that zinc is absolutely necessary for heavy metal detoxification. We make our own endogenous chelator to get rid of heavy metals, called metallothionein. And part of the response to heavy metals is to make more metallothionein, but to do so is zinc-dependent. You can only respond to heavy metals with this protein, metallothionein, that helps get rid of them to the extent you have enough zinc.

But here’s the thing. All the scientific experimental data that we have suggests that the ability of metallothionein to respond to heavy metals is not just zinc-dependent in a way where if you have enough zinc, you can make it, and if you don’t, it’s a problem. It’s dependent on zinc in a linear fashion across deficiency, normal range, and higher than normal concentrations of zinc.

In other words, if you are not deficient in zinc, I believe that it is probably the case that if you increase your zinc status further, as long as you don’t cause any problems with zinc toxicity or deficiencies of other minerals, increases of zinc above normal, even beyond curing a deficiency, getting the zinc status higher will help you better—more effectively detoxify from heavy metals.

And so when I, the way that I look at this is if you have a really severe case of a clinical problem from toxicity, this is a whole ‘nother ballgame where you need to be doing whatever you can, working with the appropriate healthcare professional. But if you get a lab test that says your mercury is a little bit high, you don’t know if you have any symptoms, it’s, you know, it’s clearly not double the normal range, let alone higher.

Then I think when you’re dealing with something moderate like that if your alternative is a chelation therapy that has all its own dangers from greater mobilization of that heavy metal, the potential for it to get into other tissues, but also the potential of any chelation therapy is to cause deficiencies of other minerals including zinc, then it’s much more gentler and safer to cause a little gentle boost to your zinc status than it is to engage in a chelation therapy, again, when we’re talking about a moderate increase that doesn’t have obvious clinical manifestations. So in those cases, what I would do is start using zinc supplementation in accordance with the two episodes ago “How to Supplement with Zinc” that I will post a link to in this description.

As a brief summary, you want to get the right form, you want to take it on an empty stomach if you can, and you want a low dose like 15 milligrams balanced with copper, such as Jarrow’s Zinc Balance. So I would take something like Jarrow’s Zinc Balance on an empty stomach once a day, and when I say empty stomach, maybe an hour before the next meal, once a day. See how that impacts your levels, consider tweaking it up to twice a day or at most three times a day and see if that helps bring the heavy metals down. My suspicion is that most of the time, that will work, and I think it’s much gentler and safer than trying to do a chelation therapy for those cases of heavy metals.

Again, when you have a severe toxicity, you’re dealing with clinical manifestations, that’s a whole other ballgame.

Types Of Candida infections (And How To Treat Them)

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

If you’ve been told you have Candida, it could mean you have any one of a number of infections. That’s right – Candida comes in many different forms! While an overgrowth of Candida yeast often begins in the intestines, the way it manifests in your body can vary widely. From fungal foot conditions to intestinal infection, Candida albicans is a nasty beast that is often difficult to diagnose.

Fortunately, there are plenty of different methods for treating Candida’s many forms. This article will cover the different types of infections and your options for getting rid of it, whether by pharmaceutical drugs or naturally.

How Do Candida Infections Occur?

Although your body is usually able to ward off hostile bacteria and yeast, there are times when your immune system isn’t functioning as well as it should. In other cases, small cuts or breaks in the superficial layers of your skin may allow bacteria and yeasts to enter, causing infection. Certain environmental conditions can make it easier for Candida to thrive on the skin, particularly hot and humid weather, poor hygiene, or tight clothing.

Other risk factors for Candida infections relate to an individual’s age or health status. Those who are more prone to infection include babies and children, but also people who:

  • Eat a diet high in sugar and processed foods
  • Have diabetes
  • Have repeatedly taken antibiotics
  • Have inflammatory disorders
  • With a weakened immune system
  • Take medications such as PPIs or the contraceptive pill
  • Are chronically stressed

Types of Candida Infections

The various types of Candida infections include the following. Just click on a link to jump down to the relevant section:

Each of these has different symptoms, and each will respond to different treatment options. Let’s take a closer look.

Athlete’s foot

What is it?

Skin infections are a common symptom of Candida overgrowth, and can occur almost anywhere on the body. The areas that Candida yeast tend to favor are where skin is touching or rubbing together, such as in folds or creases. The armpits, groin, and between the fingers and toes are prime sites for fungus to thrive as these areas are often warm, moist and sweaty. (1)

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) is a type of fungal skin infection that usually occurs in athletes or anything else who is regularly active. It’s usually caused by a strain of Candida fungi. If the right conditions are present, the yeast can multiply rapidly into athlete’s foot.

Although generally considered a mild sort of skin infection, it’s a good idea to treat athlete’s foot as soon as it appears as it can spread to other areas of the body, including the groin, face and scalp. Athlete’s foot appears as dry and brittle skin between the toes. The skin on your feet maybe flaky and prone to itching. Small, painful blisters may also appear, usually between your toes or on the sole of your foot. Skin discoloration is also likely.

How Do You Treat It?

Good hygiene

A major contributor to the development of athlete’s foot is poor hygiene. Not washing your feet and footwear regularly will provide the perfect growing conditions for candida yeast to multiply on your skin. Your feet are usually a warm, sweaty environment with plenty of bacteria around, which is great for helping organisms to thrive.

Diet

Be sure to include plenty of antifungal and anti-inflammatory foods in your diet, such as onions, garlic and ginger. Reduce your intake of refined sugars and alcohol. There is evidence that a diet high in sugar can lead to fungal skin infections.

Natural antifungal treatments

Extra-virgin organic coconut oil harbors powerful antifungal and antibacterial properties. It’s great for applying directly to your feet to both treat athlete’s foot and also prevent it from developing. Coconut oil is also a great moisturizer!

Tea tree oil is another fantastic treatment for athlete’s foot. It’s recommended by the American Cancer Society as a topical antiseptic when used on the skin to kill germs – even those resistant to other antibiotics. Tea tree oil is also useful in treating various types of fungus. (2)

Pharmaceutical drugs

Antifungal creams or powders are often prescribed by doctors or can be purchased OTC.  Steroid creams can also reduce inflammation but they should not be taken consistently over a long period of time. Antifungal medication, such as Itraconazole, is also an option, but can have some side-effects.

Oral thrush

What is it?

Also known as oral candidiasis, oral thrush is a type of yeast infection that develops on the tongue and inside of the mouth. A small amount of Candida fungus can live in your mouth without causing harm. However, if the yeast begins to grow out of control, thrush can result.

Oral thrush is most common in babies and toddlers. It appears as white bumps on the inner cheeks and on the tongue. Fortunately, the infection is usually mild and doesn’t cause major health issues, but should be treated as soon as possible.

How Do You Treat It?

Use a natural mouthwash

Apple cider vinegar can kill the Candida yeast in adult cases of oral thrush. Gargle with a solution of water and ACV (1 cup water to half a cup of ACV) for three minutes a day.

Coconut oil is another good option with antifungal properties. Just take a teaspoon and swish it around your mouth for a few minutes each day.

Lastly, rinsing with a warm salt water solution can also help to reduce some of the yeast in the mouth. Avoid commercial mouthwash as this can aggravate the condition by disturbing your mouth flora even further.

Probiotics

Eating unsweetened acidophilus yogurt is a great way to introduce healthy bacteria to the mouth. The healthy strains of bacteria in the yogurt can help to reduce the growth and spread of harmful yeast. In the case of babies with oral thrush, it’s possible to apply oral swabs of acidophilus yogurt to the mouth or even to the mother’s nipples before breastfeeding. Acidophilus can also be added to breastmilk. (3)

Probiotic supplements can also be useful. When the intestinal microbiome is healthy, infections like oral thrush become less likely. If you stick to a low sugar diet and taken some good probiotics, you might find that your immune system deals with the oral thrush all by itself.

Coconut oil for children with oral thrush

As the active antifungal agent in coconut oil, caprylic acid may be the most gentle and effective treatment for infants and young children with oral thrush. Some health experts suggest that a mother can swab her nipples with coconut oil (which contains caprylic acid) before breastfeeding.

Pharmaceutical drugs

Your doctor may prescribe oral antifungal medications such as Fluconazole (Diflucan) or the antifungal lozenges Clotrimazole (Mycelex Troche). These can both be effective in treating oral thrush, although Diflucan does tend to some with some side effects.

Yeast infections

What is it?

A vaginal or penile yeast infection is certainly one of the most unpleasant of Candida infections – but it’s also one of the most common. It’s thought that around 75% of women will suffer one of these infections at some stage during their life. Symptoms include itching, burning, smelly discharge and pain. The pain may be worse with intercourse.

Nearly all (at least 90%) of vaginal and penile yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans. Other forms of Candida are usually responsible for the remainder of yeast infections. (4)

How Do You Treat It?

Probiotic Yogurt

One of the most effective treatments for yeast infection is unsweetened probiotic yogurt. Studies have shown that yogurt can be administered both orally and vaginally to reduce the yeast population and improve ‘friendly’ bacteria colonies. Be sure to choose only natural, unsweetened yogurt for both methods! (5)

Tea Tree oil bath

Adding a few drops of tea tree oil or oregano oil to a bath can be helpful in treating Candida yeast. Tea tree is an effective antifungal and antibacterial agent that has been found to be effective against all strains of Candida, even drug-resistant ones.

Oregano oil is a powerful antifungal treatment that has been shown to kill pathogenic yeast and bacteria, including Candida albicans.

Pharmaceutical Drugs

Both oral and vaginal antifungal agents are available to treat yeast infection. Oral options include Fluconazole (Diflucan), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), while vaginal creams such as Butoconazole (Femstat) and clotrimazole (Mycelex, Gyne-Lotrimin, FemCare), miconazole (Monistat-7, Femizol-M) are also effective.

Nail fungus

What is it?

Fungal nail infections arise when Candida yeast multiplies out of control. It can lead to painful infections under the nail that cause pain and swelling, and may make the nail separate from the finger or toe. The nails can become thickened and dull, which causes them to split and fall off.

Because the fungi that cause nail infections tend to be microscopic, diagnosis usually requires examination of the debris under the nail in a laboratory. This fungus can affect both fingernails and toenails, but most commonly occurs in toenails.

How Do You Treat It?

Unfortunately, treating nail fungus infections is a difficult and timely process. Numerous pharmaceutical medications and topical treatments are available, but many are not very effective.,

Oregano oil/tea tree oil

As mentioned above, oregano and tea tree are two powerful antifungal treatments that can help to control yeast infection. Oregano contains thymol, which has been shown to reduce fungal infestation, while tea tree contains a number of compounds, including terpinen-4-ol, that have been shown to kill certain bacteria, viruses and fungi. Oregano and tea tree oil can sometimes be combined, but this must be done carefully to avoid an allergic reaction or irritation. (6)

Snakeroot extract (Black cohosh)

A traditional Mexican medicine, snakeroot has long been used to treat nail infections caused by Candida. Also known as black cohosh, snakeroot is made from plants in the sunflower family. Research has shown that it may have a similar efficacy to clopirox and ketaconazole, which makes it a useful alternative to pharmaceutical drugs. (7)

Pharmaceutical drugs

Oral medications for nail infections include terbinafine (Lamisil), itraconazole (Sporanox), fluconazole (Diflucan). These usually have to be taken for around four months while the uninfected nail grows.

Jock itch

What is it?

Also known as tinea cruris, jock itch is a fungal infection that affects the skin of the genitals, inner thighs and buttocks. It is most common in active people who sweat a lot, such as athletes. It can also occur in people who are overweight and have a lot of skin folds.

The fungus that causes jock itch is usually Trichophyton rubrum, although Candida albicans is often also involved.

Jock itch presents as an itchy, red rash, usually ring-shaped. It can cause severe irritation and discomfort in the warm, moist parts of the body. It often begins as a reddened area of skin in the crease of the groin, appearing as a half-crescent that spreads onto the upper thigh.

There may also be a line of small blisters on the outside of the rash. Burning or constant itching is typical, and the skin may become scaly or flaky.

While it can be quite distressing, jock itch is generally quite easy to treat and will go away if the area is kept clean and dry.

How Do You Treat it?

Hygiene

Like athlete’s foot, the fungi that cause jock itch thrive in warm, moist conditions. Wearing clean, dry clothes and keeping the groin area as dry as possible will help to keep fungi at bay.

Apple cider vinegar

The antibacterial and antifungal agents in ACV have been shown to reduce Candida growth and development, so it can be a great natural option for treating jock itch. Try combining equal parts apple cider vinegar and water and using in a spray bottle. Apply to the affected area as needed. (8)

Pharmaceutical drugs

Over-the-counter antifungal ointments, lotion, powder or sprays are readily available and may be all you need to clear up the rash. It’s important to continue treating for at least 1-2 weeks.

Because the Candida fungi can also cause athlete’s foot, be sure to treat both at the same time. This will help to reduce the risk of recurrence. Severe jock itch that doesn’t respond to treatment may require prescription-strength topical cream or oral medication.

Diaper rash

What is it?

Diaper rash occurs most often in babies aged between 4 and 15 months old, or any child wearing a diaper. It affects between 7-35 percent of infants at some point, and is more common when babies begin to eat solid foods.

Diaper rash develops as a result of an overgrowth of Candida. Because the diaper area is usually warm and moist, it provides the perfect conditions for Candida yeast to grow and spread.

Diaper rash is also more common in babies who are taking antibiotics or whose mothers are taking antibiotics while breastfeeding, or babies who have had a bout of diarrhea.

Most cases of diaper rash are only for a short period and can be easily resolved with home treatment.

How Do You Treat It?

Good hygiene

Reducing the risk of diaper rash and preventing its recurrence begins with keeping the area clean and dry. The ‘ABCDE’ method for treating diaper rash is a helpful way of remembering all the steps:

A = air: let the infant go diaper-free to air out the skin
B = barrier; use an ointment to protect the skin
C = clean; keep the skin clean
D = disposable diapers; avoid cloth diapers for a time and try using disposable
E = educate; educate yourself about the causes of the rash and take steps to prevent it recurring (
9)

Pharmaceutical drugs

A persistent yeast infection may result in a prescription for an antifungal treatment, either as a cream, ointment, or powder. These are usually applied a few times each day or used as a barrier skin ointment. In serious cases, steroid ointment may be prescribed. However, these should be a last resort as the ingredients can be irritating.

Intestinal candida

What is it?

This is one of the most serious forms of Candida overgrowth and can lead to multiple health issues. Although Candida albicans is naturally present in the gastrointestinal tract of both humans and animals, an imbalance of healthy bacteria and pathogenic yeast can result in elevated levels of Candida. This in turn has been linked to a number of chronic illnesses and symptoms.

Studies suggest that commensal organisms such as Candida residing in the GI tract can escape from this area and move into the bloodstream. Common symptoms of gastrointestinal candidiasis can include anal itching, belching, bloating, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, gas, intestinal cramps, vomiting, and gastric ulcers.

Both inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal Candidacolonization are associated with high levels of the pro-inflammatory chemicals in the body called cytokines. Intestinal Candida has been linked to many chronic bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis and gastric ulcers. (10)

How Do You Treat It?

The Candida diet

A low sugar, anti-inflammatory diet can help to reduce the spread of Candida albicans in the gut. To follow an anti-Candida diet, the most important steps are to eliminate processed foods and limit your intake of carbohydrates.

Adding antifungal foods such as coconut oil, apple cider vinegar and garlic can also help to halt the growth of yeast in the gastrointestinal tract. These healthy foods will also have the benefit of reducing the stress on your digestive system, and allowing your immune system to focus on fighting the yeast.

Reducing sugar intake is the most important aspect of the Candida diet, as sugar is known to ‘feed’ the Candida yeast. Refined sugars should be avoided as much as possible, but the natural sugars in fruit should also be kept to a minimum. It’s also a good idea to reduce the intake of glutenous foods, as these can exacerbate inflammation in the gut.

Probiotics

Probiotics are the ‘friendly’ bacteria that help to overcome or crowd out harmful yeasts and ‘bad’ bacteria. Taking a high quality probotic supplement that contains a variety of strains (mainly Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria) should be a priority, especially when taking pharmaceutical medication.

Probiotics will help to restore the natural balance of the digestive sytem and replenish healthy bacteria. Probiotic supplementation will also help to boost the immune system and support the body’s natural defenses in overcoming opportunitistic yeasts. Probiotic, fermented foods also have an important role to play.  (11)

In newborns, probiotics have been found to be especially effective in preventing gastrointestinal colonization by Candida, helping to reduce the risk of Candida yeast expanding fungal colonies in the gastrointestinal tract.

Antifungal treatments

Antifungals can come in several forms – prescription drugs, natural antifungal supplements, and antifungal foods. These can all be useful for a intestinal Candida overgrowth.

Prescription antifungals include Diflucan and Nystatin. These antifungal treatments have been used for decades and can be quite effective, but they do come with side effects. It is incredibly difficult to design a antifungal drug that will attack a fungus but that won’t attack human cells at the same time. That’s why these drugs are generally not very well-tolerated, and why many people choose to try natural antifungals instead.

Natural antifungals include caprylic acid, garlic extract, grapefruit seed extract, and undecylenic acid. These can be purchased from most health stores and generally have a much milder effect that prescription antifungals. However, they are also not generally as potent, so they need to be combined with other interventions, such as the diet and probiotics listed above.

Lastly, we have antifungal foods. Coconut oil, garlic, onions, cinnamon, cloves and number of other natural antifungals can be added to your normal diet as often as possible. A surprising number of foods have antifungal or fungistatic properties, and it’s generally very easy to include them in a healthy eating plan

Fighting Candida Infections Takes Time

Treating Candida infections is rarely simple, as fungi are more difficult to fight off than most bacteria. It’s also possible for many fungi and yeast to become resistant to pharmaceutical drugs, which can mean that long periods of taking antifungal medications is not only harmful to the body but ineffective to the yeast infection!

The most successful way to overcome any particular yeast infection is to use a variety of different methods. In many cases, this may mean a change in diet along with natural antifungals. Add plenty of antifungal nutrients to your diet, and cut back on sugar intake. If the infection is skin-related, be sure to keep the area as dry and clean as possible. Wash regularly and use powders (natural or pharmaceutical) to absorb moisture.

Last but not least, support your body’s natural defenses with probiotics. Most of your immune system is in the gut, so this is where ‘friendly’ bacteria is needed most. Probiotic supplements are the easiest and fastest way to boost the colonies of beneficial microflora in the gut.

Chicken Drumsticks with Garlic-Butter Sauce

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Chicken Drumsticks With Garlic-Butter Sauce

Chicken drumsticks are simplicity at its best. You can dress them up as creamy chicken coconut curry drumsticks, or dress them down with a generous dash of salt and pepper. Anything goes! Keep it in the back of your mind that you can always use chicken thighs instead of drumsticks. They add a little more fat, extra flavorful bites, plus there is more crispy skin to indulge in. Just add a few more minutes to the baking time and all will be golden.

When work and life leave you with little time in the kitchen, uncomplicated recipes can be lifesavers. They get bonus points for being budget-friendly too! If you don’t have any green onions on hand, you could finely chop some chives, or parsley instead. And if you happen to have half of a leftover lemon, squeeze that on just before serving, even add some zest to the butter sauce. Simple recipes (baked chicken for example) are great places to use up leftover herbs and vegetables, appreciating zero food waste all the while.

Whether you grab them by hand, or choose to use fork and knife, one thing is for sure: a bowl of cauliflower rice will sit nicely by their side. You may want to try Southwest-style vegetable cauliflower rice, if you are searching for some spicier notes and colorful vegetables in your meal. If you would like to set some earthy tones on the table, then let us suggest cauliflower mushroom risotto to complement the drumsticks with garlic-butter sauce.

Tom Jones weight loss: The Voice coach dropped over two stone on this diet - Express

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Tom Jones, 78, dropped over two stone in 2011 by adopting the paleo diet. The It’s Not Unusual hitmaker has remained in shape after ditching unhealthy treats when he realised he could no longer fit into his suits. Taking on board the paleo diet, which is known as ‘the caveman diet’, The Voice coach Tom began to focus on fresh, raw foods instead of processed meats and carbohydrates. He said on Radio 2 in 2011: “I was putting too much weight on.

“I didn’t think I was going to and I left the working out for a bit, thought I’d keep a check on it.

“But with the Christmas puddings and cakes, before I knew it I was 230lb (16.4 stone) which was 30lb more than I should be.”

Tom added: “I couldn’t get into my suits. That’s when I thought, ’this has got to stop’.”

The pop star got help from a dietician and a US diet book named Syndrome X: The Complete Nutritional Program to Prevent and Reverse Insulin Resistance, overhauling his diet and upping his intake of fresh foods.

Tom explained: “I’d recommend it to anybody. It tells you to get back to what we used to eat when we were hunters and gatherers. Eat anything that’s natural – meat, fish, veg.”

He also quit drinking for a few months after his dietician was left shocked to discover the pop star was drinking a bottle of red wine with his dinner.

“What I didn’t tell him was I’d started off with a martini, had a cognac and a bottle of champagne too,” he added.

Tom lost 2st 7lb in just five months on the paleo diet.

The Voice coach also recently took up boxing, after a health scare forced him to cancel gigs when he was rushed to hospital in July last year.

Speaking to The Mirror, Tom said: “I’ve got a trainer who comes to see me. A lot of stretching and boxing thrown in.

“He puts the gloves on and we do a couple of rounds in the gym, which is really good. It’s a good cardiovascular workout.

“It keeps me on my toes. I do it twice a week. I get in the gym whenever – three times a week usually. I try to watch my diet too.”

Last year, Sir Tom was forced to cancel a number of concerts as he battled a bacterial infection.

At the time, updates were announced on his Twitter page which stated he had been treated in hospital.

The legendary singer and songwriter returned to the stage in August, two months after being hospitalised.

Speaking about the illness, he told The Mirror: “I was on the road and when we got to London, I was feeling weak. I wasn’t feeling so good and they said, ‘You had better get yourself checked, your blood and everything’.”

The Delilah chart-topper added: “I just didn’t feel good and they said you need antibiotics. So they gave it intravenously and that was it.

“If it had happened at another time, nobody would have taken any notice. I would have gone in for a couple of days and that would have been it. But I had to cancel shows. So that was a big deal.”

Here's Everything We Know About LeBron James' Diet - menshealth.com

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

LeBron James is a beast, and there's plenty of information out there on the workouts that have helped him achieve G.O.A.T. status. But there's been less focus on what the 6'8, 250 lb., NBA star eats in a day to keep himself going. James has dropped tidbits about his diet over the years, and his social media posts reveal the different nutrition tactics he undertakes depending on what his needs are at the time.

    Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

Here's how James evolves his diet, just like he evolves his gameplay.

LeBron James' Diet for Weight Loss

In 2014, James posted a picture in which he looked noticeably slimmer, which sparked rumors that the NBA player had switched up his diet.

According to Business Insider, ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported James was on a diet on a podcast with Grantland's Bill Simmons. Windhorst didn't confirm how he knew about James' diet, but the well-connected sportswriter has been covering the NBA player since his days as a high school freshman in 1999. He said James was probably in "the worst shape he's been in in a while" at the start of the 2013-14 season, and he got off to a "slow start" that season. That season came after he won the NBA Finals with the Miami Heat in June 2013 and got married to longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson.

James himself poked fun at his diet with an Instagram post, and he opened up about it to reporters about a month later.

"I had no sugars, no dairy, I had no carbs," the father of three explained during an event to unveil his "LeBron 12" sneakers, as reported by Sports Illustrated. "All I ate was meat, fish, veggies and fruit. That's it. For 67 straight days."

During that time, James ate meals like lobster salad with asparagus and mango chutney, as well as an arugula salad with chicken, fruit, and nuts, topped with olive oil and lemon vinaigrette dressing.

He was so dedicated to his diet, he didn't eat the dessert a resort made for him when he was on vacation in Greece.

Some outlets reported his diet was a low-carb one, while others said it was paleo, probably due to the fact that James' former Miami Heat teammate Ray Allen started a paleo diet in 2013. Both diets have a lot of overlap, with the guiding principle of limiting processed foods and foods high in carbohydrates, and instead reaching for foods like lean meats, fish, and vegetables.

    LeBron James' Training Diet

NBA games run for 48 minutes, but that doesn't count when the clock is stopped for fouls and timeouts, or when games go into overtime. That's a lot of active time, and that means athletes need a lot of calories before the big game.

In 2016, James spoke with Business Insider about how he fuels up before game time. "Before competition for me would be like a chicken breast and maybe a little pasta. The carbs help because you're going out and playing a lot of minutes," he said. "But a salad and some veggies will have me perfectly fine. And before the game I might have a protein shake and some fruit, and I'll be ready to go."

Comparing himself to swimmer Michael Phelps, who is known to eat massive omelets, stacks of pancakes, and full-size pizzas during training, James said he'll "wait for that after the game. I can't do that before the game."

And as Stack reports, the NBA star slightly changes his approach when it's playoffs time. "The thing that I started cutting down is the sugars. When it comes to the playoffs, it kinda slows down the process of recovery. Throughout the regular season it's okay to have a little bit of it. But in the postseason, optimal recovery—whoever can recover the fastest from game to game is going to put themselves in position to be successful the next game, he said during a video on his UNINTERRUPTED platform. "So the sugars I kinda cut out, but the carbs I kinda ramp up. Because you're losing so many calories, you're burning so many calories, burning all your energy throughout those games. So I kinda go heavy on the carbs because it gives you energy. It's worked for me."

Post-game, James rehydrates with a combination of water and a carbohydrate-rich recovery fluid provided by his personal trainer, Mike Mancias, to replace fluids lost. As CBS Sports reports, this helps to refill his levels of glycogen, which is a stored form of carbohydrate found in the liver and muscle tissue that helps to provide the body with energy.

He then eats a meal with high quality-protein and carbs, much like his pre-game meal.

James was also known to get drinks from The Juice Spot post-workout. The now-closed juice shop was owned by his wife Savannah, and it offered juices, smoothies, and acai bowls. The "Peanut Butter Dream" smoothie that James was seen drinking on his Instagram featured ingredients like almond milk, peanut butter, whey, maca, cinnamon, and agave.

If his Instagram is any evidence, James is known to enjoy a good glass of wine. He told ESPN that he drinks wine "pretty much every day," and former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate Kevin Love mentioned that James "has a supercomputer in his brain" when it comes to wine.

While studies differ, most doctors agree that when consumed in moderation, red wine has health benefits, from increasing your levels of good HDL cholesterol to lowering your risk of heart attack, hence why James hashtagged one of his photos, "#GoodForMyHeart."

He often indulges himself at Blaze Pizza, as James is an investor, franchisee, and paid endorser of the made-to-order pizza company. In 2016, he shared a copy of his receipt when he ordered a pizza there, and his DIY pizza had a whopping 16 toppings on it — including, but not limited to, fresh basil, turkey meatballs, banana peppers, and kalamata olives.
